A Heart-Warming Story: This Penguin Swims 8,000km Every Year To Meet His Human Friend

가슴 따듯한 이야기: 매년 한 인간 친구를 만나기 위해 8,000km를 수영하는 펭귄

 

 

 

A South American Magellanic penguin — swims over 8,000km every year to meet his human friend Joao Pereira de Souza — a 71-year-old retired bricklayer and part-time fisherman living on an island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pereira de Souza rescued Dindim when he washed up on the shore in 2011, starving and covered in oil.

Pereira de Souza cleaned Dindim’s tarred feathers for over a week and nursed him back to health by feeding him fish to help him regain his strength. He then took him to the sea to release him so that the penguin could migrate back to his habitat. “But he wouldn’t leave. He stayed with me for 11 months and then just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,” Pereira de Souza told Globo TV. “Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February,” he explains. South American Magellanic penguins usually breed in the Patagonia coasts of Argentina and Chile — 4,000-8,000km away.

Biologist Joao Paulo Krajewski — who interviewed Pereira de Souza for Globo TV - told The

Independent, “Professionals who work with animals try to avoid relationships like this occurring so they are able to reintroduce the animal into the wild. But in this isolated case the authorities allowed Dindim to stay with Joao because of his kindness.”

He added, “I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well. When he sees him he wags his tail like a dog and honks with delight.” Indeed, Pereira de Souza said, “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.”

“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me. I’m flattered Dindim is happy to exchange his home with thousands of other penguins every year to find his way here to spend one-to-one time with me,” he reflects. “It’s a very special relationship.”(Agencies)

 

 

생명의 은인을 못 잊어 해마다 8000 킬로 떨어진 섬을

찾아가는 한 마리 펭귄이 있습니다.

 

2011 년, 브라질 리우데자네이루에 있는 작은 섬 해안에서

기름투성이가 되어 굶주린 채 죽어 가던 마젤란 펭귄을

Joao Pereira de Souza (71 세) 씨가 발견했습니다.

 

 

할아버지는 일주일 후 건강을 회복한 펭귄을

바다로 데려가 돌려보내려 했지만

펭귄이 떠나려 하지 않아 실패했습니다.

그 후 11 개월을 함께 지낸 어느 날,

새로 털갈이를 한 직후에 펭귄은 돌연 모습을 감추었습니다.

 

 

이제 두 번 다시 만날 수 없으리라 생각하고 있던 어느 날,

할아버지는 해변에서 자신의 눈을 의심했습니다.

Dindim이 자신을 향해 걸어오기 시작한 것입니다.

 

그리고 그 해를 시작으로 Dindim은 해마다 6 월이 되면

할아버지를 찾아와서 8 개월을 함께 보낸 후 번식기인 2 월이 되면

아르헨티나나 칠레로 돌아가는 생활을 계속하고 있습니다.

남미의 마젤란 펭귄은 통상적으로 4000 ~ 8000 킬로 떨어진

아르헨티나와 칠레의 파타고니아 해안에서 번식 활동을 합니다.

 

 

할아버지는 Dindim을 자신의 아이처럼 사랑하며

Dindim도 할아버지를 매우 좋아한다고 웃으며 말합니다.

Dindim은 할아버지 이외의 사람에게는 곁을 주지 않으며

다른 사람이 만지려하면 부리로 쫀다고 합니다.

 

하지만 할아버지를 발견하면

마치 강아지처럼 꼬리와 날개를 흔들며 기뻐하고,

울음소리를 내며 무릎 위에 올라가 앉기도 합니다.

 

 

생물학자 Joao Paulo Krajewsk 씨는 이런 케이스는 본적이 없으며,

Dindim은 할아버지를 자신과 같은 펭귄 가족이라고 

생각하고 있는 것 같다고 말합니다.

Dindim은 해를 거듭할수록 할아버지에게 어리광을 부리게 되었고.

이제는 서로에게 없어서는 안 될 소중한 존재가 되었습니다.
